File Aware Storage Optimization
A relatively small number of file types are driving the explosion of digital content. Storage optimization starts with the premise of being file-aware. By understanding the layout of specific application files – like an email program or a digital image – you can make intelligent decisions about how to reorganize that data for optimal storage. File-aware storage optimization starts by identifying file types, and the applications they come from, and then applying file type-specific algorithms to optimize the storage of those files .

The Ocarina ECO System
Ocarina begins by identifying each file, and then making intelligent decisions about how to optimize it for storage. This is not just traditional compression or dedupe – but an intelligent set of operations triggered by first identifying the type of the file. The Ocarina ECO system process involves three key steps.

 

File Aware

  • Extract: The Ocarina solution extracts fundamental storage objects – the actual file data – from each file. This often requires delayering compound documents, decoding already-compressed files, and going through several steps to get to the fundamental storage objects in a given file
  • Correlate: Once the storage objects have been identified, Ocarina can correlate storage objects both within and across files. Whereas dedupe looks for exact matches of duplicate data chunks across files, Ocarina can find both exact matches and similar storage objects. Correlation works at the information level, not just the byte level. Ocarina can remove redundant information from correlated storage objects both within and across files
  • Optimize: After correlation, Ocarina will optimize the remaining storage objects, employing patent-pending file-aware algorithms to get the best possible space savings for each fundamental data type

Results are impressive. In Ocarina’s file-aware storage optimization solution, initial space savings range from 40% for complex image files to well over 90% for common office file mixes. It is not unreasonable to expect that almost any company could reduce the space they need to store their user and application files by 2/3rds or more. - on storage they already have, from vendors they are already work with, on networks that are already in place.
