Transparent Split Band Deployment
The Ocarina product architecture is designed to not only provide up to a 10:1 optimization of your storage space, but also to provide a fully fault-tolerant storage optimization solution with no single point of failure. The Ocarina split band architecture uses Ocarina Optimizers to reduce the amount of space taken by your files and Ocarina Readers to give users and applications dynamic real time access to optimized files. Neither the Optimizer nor the Reader keep any state or information required to access your data or your files. Everything needed to read, write and access your data is stored on your own storage. This approach means that you can buy as many Optimizers as you need to process and optimize the amount of storage you have, and you can deploy as many copies of the Ocarina Reader as you want, for both performance and 24x7 fault tolerant operation.

Differentiated Deployment

Any Ocarina Reader, hardware or software, can read any Ocarina optimized file. You can optimize a file on your NetApps filer in Los Angeles, copy the optimized file to your EMC, Data Direct, or HP storage in London, and an Ocarina Reader there – either hardware or software – will be able to immediately read or write it.

Choose Which Files to Optimize
You set the policies for Ocarina to find files you want optimized – all the files in a certain directory, all the files that have not been read in 30 days, all the files of a certain type. We then read those files, select the best-fit optimization algorithm for that file type, and then write the optimized file back out to your storage. All of the files properties are retained – users will still see a file of the same size, in the same place, and with the same security and permissions settings. In practice, the file will have been reduced in size by as much as 90%.
