Consider Data Reduction for Primary Storage >>

Ocarina's key differentiator, according to CEO Murli Thirumale, is that its ECOsystem data reduction platform provides content-aware (file type-specific) optimization through specialized algorithms. ECOsystem is a post-processing (or offline or out-of-band) approach that combines object-level data de-duplication and compression. "ECO" refers to the system's "extract-correlate-optimize" approach to capacity optimization, in which data is first extracted into its original format (and uncompressed if the data is compressed), correlated (with hashing), and optimized with algorithms matched to specific sub-files or objects. In certain environments, this approach leads to higher levels of capacity optimization, and because it’s a post-process implementation it doesn’t degrade primary application performance.  [more...]

[Rainmaker Entertainment] plans to deploy Ocarina Networks' ECOsystem appliance between the BlueArc and Isilon devices to compress and deduplicate data as it's migrated from primary to secondary storage. This will allow the studio to keep data intact after projects finish and avoid restores from tape. It will also stretch the life of the secondary Isilon storage and free up space on the primary BlueArc NAS head for current projects.  [more...]

HP StorageWorks' Callahan pointed out that software from HP partner Ocarina Networks can be ported to the ExDS9100 system for data reduction, and CIFS support "is implemented on a consulting basis." A new version of replication software was recently added to the PolyServe file system. "I'm not announcing future ExDS releases, but it's not an absurd thing to conclude that you might expect the capability to show up [in ExDS] at some point," he said.  [more...]

Eye On Storage In The Data Center  >>

Many experts point to cost-cutting as the thrust behind today’s biggest storage trends, and for good reason, explains Carter George, vice president of products for Ocarina Networks (www.ocarinanetworks.com). Because data centers are being forced to do more with less, they’re moving toward storage efficiency and data reduction technologies (such as thin provisioning, unified storage, data reduction, and compression) as potential answers to that challenge. File storage vendors are leading the charge, with George noting that some companies have made storage efficiency and deduplication the cornerstones of their product and marketing campaigns, an effort that is forcing other storage vendors to fall in line.  [more...]

Storage World Asks: Is a Copy a Backup? >>

Is a copy of a file a backup? A group of of storage bloggers from EMC, Nirvanix, Ocarina and other locations in the storage blogosphere have been debating this topic and have generally agreed that it is, so long as it meets certain criteria.  [more...]

Storage CAPEX VS. OPEX >>

To hit that return on investment faster new storage projects need to save CAPEX in multiple areas at the same time. A good example is primary storage optimization technologies that also optimize a second tier of storage. Ocarina Networks for example can deduplicate and compress file based data while moving to a second tier of storage.  [more...]

Ocarina Makes Waves with Lossless Image Compression >>

Ocarina, the deduplication startup, is making waves with its partnerships with storage vendors, due to its unique lossless image compression technology. Yet the Ocarina founders were not wedded to image deduplication when they started up the company. How did it come about?  [more...]

Think of all those You Tube videos [Ocarina's] content-aware compression could reduce to a fraction of their original size. We would only need 30 Apple iPod Touches then, or one or two more. Eat your heart out, Data Domain. ®  [more...]
