What's Inside Internal Storage Clouds? >>

Although internal storage clouds are a rarity today, it's clear what their appeal will be. "This is about performance vs. cost. The internal storage cloud is focused on cost," said Carter George, vice president of products at Ocarina Networks. Conventional storage consisting of sophisticated storage arrays, storage-area networks (SANs), high-performance disk drives, and elaborate backup and recovery, by contrast, focuses on performance and data protection.  [more...]

Deduplication Moves Beyond Deduplication  >>

In backup jobs high deduplication rates are almost assured. In primary storage where there is, or at least should be, less duplicate data the going gets a little tougher. It seems that any solution in this space should offer compression, as Nexenta does with their ZFS based product, Storwize with their inline appliance or Ocarina Networks with their out of band optimizer. Ocarina adds deduplication to the process as well as content specific optimizers that provide a greater understanding of the file formats being processed. In addition they can migrate data and track its location while they are optimizing it.  [more...]

Classifying Green Storage >>

In this post George Crump discusses the increasing desire for power-efficient storage. George mentions Ocarina to describe how companies can integrate the technology into their pre-existing storage so companies can use less of what they have already.  [more...]

Petrocelli said GreenBytes is seeking resellers specializing in either primary or secondary storage. GB-X devices will compete with dedupe vendors such as EMC's Data Domain and ExaGrid Systems, archiving dedupe vendors such as NEC Hydrastor and Permabit Technology Corp., and primary storage compression startups Ocarina Networks and Storwize.  [more...]

When trying to solve the problem [of maintaining the storage capacity of multiple projects] there are two common solutions that are often attempted -- keep all the data cold or keep all the data hot. What is needed and is now being made reality by companies like Ocarina Networks is keeping all the data warm.  [more...]

Security Industry Overview >>

[Symantec] plans to continue to develop advanced deduplication features through their OpenStorage technology APIs to provide an industry-unique interface which will allow partners to integrate with their backup technologies. They should look at Ocarina Networks as a potential acquisition in this area. For more about this company, read my interview with Ocarina CEO Murli Thirumale.  [more...]

The visual effects studio that helps produce the TV crime drama CSI: Las Vegas solved its own online archiving budget mystery by deploying Ocarina Networks' ECOsystem data compression and deduplication appliance with Isilon Systems Inc.'s IQ clustered network-attached storage (NAS) systems.  [more...]

VFX Companies Lower Storage Costs with Ocarina >>

The cost of storage is part of doing business whether it’s in the post production facility or the visual effects studio. Rainmaker Entertainment and Zoic Studios both took a step to reduce those costs by adding Ocarina Networks‘ ECOsystem. According to the San Jose, CA-based Ocarina, VFX/post companies can save up to 80 percent of their primary storage footprint.  [more...]

Downsizing Storage Requirements for Post-Production >>

Ocarina Networks recently announced that Rainmaker and Zoic Studios had become users of its ECOsystem product for reducing storage requirements through de-duplication of data and compression. Other companies have de-dupe offerings, but Ocarina says the depth of research it’s done into the specific needs of post-production users make its approach especially effective. Studio Bytes asked Carter George, VP of products at Ocarina, to fill us in.  [more...]
