Ocarina in the News and Blogosphere

One of the vendors that really caught my eye at the recent Gesalt IT Field Day was Ocarina Networks. The reason for this was that before attending the session with Ocarina I knew very little about the inner workings of data compression and de-duplication, at least no-where near the level that I was about to find out. The area of unstructured de-duplication and compression isn’t an area I’ve really thought about too much before as none of companies I have worked for so far have ever had a serious requirement for such functionality outside of email and email archival de-duplication.  [more...]

The Five Rules of Tech Field Day Club >>

Rule #3. Bring your best people - You want to bring your best and brightest because there will be people (like me) who will grind into the details. 3Par and Ocarina brought their rockstars and it was apparent to each and every attendee. They knew their stuff and didn’t push questions aside..  [more...]

Day 2 Recap of Tech Field Day >>

This week, I am attending Gestalt IT Field Day. During this event, Silicon Valley companies are allowing attendees to come in and see technologies in use. One of the stops during the event is Ocarina Networks. Ocarina specializes in online storage optimization to reduce disk consumption. The main point of our visit today focused on explaining compression and de-duplication for data management. For compression, there are a few standard ways to approach it.  [more...]

Gestalt IT Tech Field Day – The Summary >>

Tech Field Day, Day 2. Ocarina, in San Jose, is a company that provides data de-duplication appliances. At Ocarina, Gestalt IT Tech Field Day delegates were treated to an eye-opener on data and de-duplication. When Ocarina CTO Gow walked in with a (paper) notebook and started wiping off the whiteboard in order to brief us, we knew we were in for a treat. He didn’t disappoint. He proceeded to lecture us – in a good way – about what data de-duplication was, and how Ocarina’s appliances and IP fitted into this. By the time he was done, you could see that their (Ocarina’s) mantra of helping you reclaim storage that you currently have, was imminently attainable. To a person, we loved the presentation, and that segued into the presentation by Nirvanix  [more...]

Day 2 of the Tech Field Day kicked off with a trip to Ocarina Networks. For those who don’t know (a) Ocarina offer a “data reduction” appliance (b) an ocarina is a small oval, china flute. I say data reduction as the Ocarina appliance uses a variety of methods for reducing data size, including compression and de-duplication. The main presenters for Ocarina were Carter George and the CTO Goutham (Gou) Rao. Rather than deliver death by PowerPoint, Gou chose to whiteboard his entire session, getting into some significant depth on the theory behind data reduction techniques. The whiteboard approach was very informative and popular with the delegates, generating lots of conversation.  [more...]

Gestalt IT Field Days, 2009. Day 2. >>

Today was the second day of the Gestalt IT Field Days. Starting at 7:30am it was a short walk across the street from the Hotel to the offices of Ocarina Networks. Ocarina do content aware storage optimization and they did a great job of taking us through their technologies along with some deep dives by their CTO on how compression and de-dupe work for different data types.  [more...]

Storage Market Shrinks After 21 Years >>

The Data Domain acquisition made earlier this year should help EMC to expand its reach in this market. Ocarina Networks is another prospect that earlier this year I recommended EMC acquire. There has not been any news on this front, but last month Ocarina did join EMC’s Velocity Technology and ISV Program, the goal of which is to improve the interoperability of Ocarina’s content-aware optimization technology and EMC’s storage networks.  [more...]
